Car Yard vs Private Seller in Kenya: Which Is Safer to Buy From?

When buying a used car in Kenya, you'll usually choose between a car yard (dealer) and a private seller. Each has trade-offs in price, paperwork and risk. Here's how they compare — and how to buy safely from either.

Buying from a car yard

Pros: Yards offer choice, easier financing, and usually handle the logbook transfer for you. Established yards protect their reputation, so there's some accountability.

Cons: You'll typically pay more than a private sale, and cars are prepared to look their best — freshly cleaned engines and interiors can hide issues. Some yards sell accident-repaired or high-mileage imports without full disclosure.

Buying from a private seller

Pros: Prices are often lower, and you can talk directly to the person who actually drove the car about its history and quirks.

Cons: Little to no recourse if something goes wrong, higher risk of paperwork problems (loans, duplicate logbooks), and you handle the transfer yourself. You're relying heavily on the seller's honesty.

What to check either way

Regardless of who you buy from:

The one step that protects you with both

The single best protection, whether it's a yard or a private seller, is an independent pre-purchase inspection. It removes the guesswork and the seller's spin, giving you an unbiased report on the car's real condition.
